Marketing a website can be frustrating, not to mention expensive. Plus, there are many times that it cost money to market a website and there is no idea if the method used will work. Throwing money away on a poor or unsuccessful online marketing method has no little or no benefit to anyone who owns or runs a website. That being said, there are a number of free alternatives available when it comes to marketing a website and getting more traffic to go there. These free methods should be mixed in with the more costly methods so that the benefits of both can be realized.

Ten Free Ways To Advertise A Website:

1. Online Coupons - A website can make coupons available for customers to use on their next purchase. This encourages traffic to increase in two ways, people may come back to the site to take advantage of the coupon, or people may distribute the coupon to their friends or co-workers which could result in them coming to the website.

2. Free Samples - Advertising that a website offers free samples is a great way to encourage people to click on a link and come to the site. People are confronted with recommendations and advertising for thousands of different websites each day, the thought of getting something free may be what makes them choose one website over another.

3. YouTube - Filming an informative or humorous video, adding a watermark to it which includes the URL of the site being marketed, and then uploading it to YouTube or other video sites is another free way of getting a URL and website name out in front of the eyes of people that could end up being traffic to that site. When doing this, attentions should be paid to making sure the video is labeled, titled, and tagged in the best way to so that it will be as beneficial to the website as possible.

4. Search Engines - Submitting to search engines is not always necessary as most search engines will come and find any site that is built and linked to by another site. There are however many things that can be done that are related to search engines to bring in traffic. This includes putting keywords into the website’s META tag fields, the text of the website, and any articles or links pointing at the website.

5. Create An Ezine - Creating an Ezine is a great way to market a website for free. Filling up an Ezine with content that is specific to the niche of the site being marketed can sometimes be difficult, but once it is created and submitted to a number of distribution sites, the Ezine works by itself directing traffic back to the website itself.

6. Free Classified Ads - There are a number of websites on the internet that feature free classified ads as part of their site. Some of these sites are full featured classified ad sites while others of these sites offer free classified ads as just a part of the services they offer.

7. Offline Methods - From giving away T-Shirts and hats that have the URL of the website being marketed printed on them, to putting the URL on bumper stickers, flyers, and other items that a business uses anyway, free offline methods of getting traffic to a website should also be pursued along with the great number of online methods.

8. Free Submission Sites - When it comes to finding free advertising or marketing ideas for websites, one of the most plentiful is the large number of free submission sites out there. There are a great number of directories, URL lists, and other linking possibilities out there that are one hundred percent free.

9. Blogging - Any website that is looking for traffic should take advantage of the great possibilities available as a result of successful blogging. Blogging is a free way to create new content, on a daily basis if need be, that will be found in search engine results and other areas of the internet. An additional benefit of blogging is that it encourages readers that have already visited the website an option to come back and see what is added or talked about in the next entry.

10. Online Communities - Whether chat based, social network based, or online forum based, joining and participating in an online community is another way to advertise a website and drive traffic to it for free. There are many communities that are either general in nature, or even focused on a specific niche, and when the URL of a website being marketed is posted in these communities it has a large chance of being clicked on and visited.

There are a number of important, effective, and useful ways to advertise a website that cost money to execute. Many of these have the exact results that the owners or managers of a website are looking for. There are also a number of free ways to advertise a website and try and find potential traffic to visit that site and they should be exploited too. Just because an advertising method is free, doesn’t mean that it is less effective.

Many website owners spend a large amount of time trying to market their websites. They use a variety of methods, some successful and some not, in a hunt for a way to get more traffic and business directed at their website. For any website owner to actually profit from their site, they need customers. Having a website is not enough. Maintaining and updating a website is not enough. What it takes for a website to be successful is a steady flow of visitors to the site. To achieve this, proven marketing steps must be taken.

There are a number of ways that people use to market their website every day, some of the more popular ones include article submission, directory submission, link buying, blog commenting, blog post purchases, and more. Many of these standard ways of marketing a website work incredibly well. But, should website marketing be limited to these and other online marketing methods? There are a number of offline marketing methods, many of which have been in use for decades if not longer, that also lend themselves to work well when marketing something that is online or internet based.

Flyers and posters
One effective offline method of marketing a website is through the use of flyers and posters. This is especially useful and effective in college or high school situations. Situations that are filled with young people who are more apt to see a web address on a flyer and then check it out later.

T-shirts and hats
One of the most popular ways to advertise anything is through apparel and this is true for online advertising as well. In fact, if the design is unique or the slogan is catchy, people could seek out these T-Shirts and hats just because they are seen as a cool thing to wear. If popular enough, sometime T-Shirts and hats can not only be useful for advertising, but also be a source of revenue too if people are willing to buy them.

Printed materials
From business cards, to stationery, to brochures and more, there are many printed materials that businesses use on a daily basis. All of these materials should have the web address displayed boldly and prominent so that they can be yet another way of advertising the website.

Periodicals
Advertising a website in the newspaper, in classified sections, or magazines is another option. While not as popular as some of the other avenues, depending on the online business, this could be a great way to get more visitors to go to a website.

Promotional material
Using promotional material, beyond apparel, is also sometimes effective in guiding more traffic to a website or online business. These other promotional materials can be in the form of printed pens, bumper stickers, magnets, calendars, and even electronic gadgets with the website printed on them.

While promoting a website online is something that definitely needs to be focused on by any website owner, it is also important not to forget about more standard offline advertising too. Many times getting a website’s address in front of the eyes of people who are not on the computer can be a good way to get traffic that wouldn’t have been available through online advertising. Online advertising and marketing is extremely important to the success of any website or online business, but this can be enhanced through smart use of offline marketing techniques too.

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest and common ways to make money online. Affiliate marketing allows everyone to make some money online whether you are the marketer or the product owner. There are thousands of affiliate marketing programs and they are all super easy to join.

Like all businesses, there are several downsides in the affiliate marketing business. If you are going to make a profit it has to be done right. Committing the most common mistakes can mean a huge portion took from you that could have been on your next paycheck. That is why you must avoid them.

The first mistake hundreds of people make is choosing the wrong affiliate marketing program. In a hurry to make cash people choose affiliate marketing programs who products may not interest a lot of people. Some choose a program that offers products that they think is “hot”. Neither are good moves. Choosing programs that offers products that might not interest people means no commission or money for you. If you join a program that offers products that are “hot” you will be competing with thousands of others who are promoting the same product.

You have to chose a program that offers products you are interested in. Do research on it and see if this product is in demand. If the product is in demand that will mean more commission for you.

A lot of people make the mistake of joining multiple affiliate programs, in an effort to make more money. There is nothing wrong with having different sources of income. If you join too many affiliate marketing programs you won’t be able to concentrate and promote them all well. You can end up making little or no money at all.

Whatever program you choose make sure it’s something you have a passion for. Things you love and are interested in you will promote them well!

You’ve seen them popping up all over the internet. You know, those blogs with the pictures of the big fancy cars and tell everyone how much money they make online? Hey, you’re on one right now, sort of. Ironically, it seems that these bloggers make most of their money online from their make money online blog where they tell people how they make money online by telling people how to make money online. Here are 28 signs of a “make money online blogger” as observed by me, starting now…

There is a giant picture of a fancy car in the header.

You get the impression they make so much money online they could actually afford one ore more of these cars.

They promote make money online ebooks that tell you how to make money online by telling others how to make money online.

They promote other “internet marketing” ebooks in general, which offer little or no useful information.

Most of the time their blog doesn’t even talk about making money online.

They have over 80 posts about fine dining.

This fine food actually looks pretty disgusting, and greasy.

In the comments, people actually say they think food looks delicious, and “makes me hungry”

“Top commentators” say other things in comments to suck up, hopefully to get a link on their sidebar “Top commentators” list

They really like 125×125 advertisements, and have at least 8 in a prominent location on their blog.

Their blog is one out of 475 (at the moment) in Entrecard’s make money online category.

They have a really annoying “stripe ad” that rests at the top of all pages on the site, which doesn’t go away when you click the “x” button.

They have a really annoying “peel away ad” which promotes some other make money online product.

They never made a dime online before starting their make money online blog.

A large chunk of their online revenue is from selling affiliate products to other potential make money online bloggers.

A large chunk of their revenue is from selling “unbiased reviews” to other make money online blogs.

The rest of their online revenue is from ad sales on their make money online blog.

They show off a picture of their biggest adsense check, presumably revenue derived from their make money online blog.

They brag about their FeedBurner RSS subscribers.

They have “RSS contests” with other make money online bloggers.

They preach about SEO yet they don’t even rank for the keywords they’re trying to target themselves.

Sometimes they get banned from Google for their questionable SEO tactics.

If they do get banned from Google, hundreds of blogs talk about it

Some actually take their place in the SERPs

They make idiotic videos to get attention (any attention must be good attention, right?).

Surprisingly, it actually works.

Most make money online blogs regurgitate the exact same information about new “revolutionary” products and services.

They put “dot Com” as part of their site title.

Okay, that’s 28 so far. In the true spirit of web 2.0 I’m going to let YOU, the internet people, come up with more. Truth is I just can’t think of anymore. Feel free to leave a comment with your tell-tale sign. Oh, and don’t forget to subscribe to the feed!

Everyone wants to find a reliable web host, right? There’s lots of different types of hosting. Shared, reseller, VPS, semi-dedicated, full dedicated - lots of hosting types out there. There are thousands and thousands of web hosts on the interweb, how do you find the right one? Well, in this little blog post I’ll tell you how not to find one. Hopefully it’ll be a little more efficient than listing all the qualities of a good host.

Sign #1: They offer unlimited hosting

If you find a host that offers unlimited disk space or better yet - unlimited bandwidth, press the back button. There is no such thing as an unlimited harddrive that can store endless amounts of data. It’s just not possible, at least not yet. Chances are if you start using up a lot of these resources, they’ll cut off at one point or another.

Sign #2: It’s a free host

Don’t sign up to those stupid little “post 4 host” sites where you make a certain number of posts on a forum, and they give you a free hosting account. Hosting is so cheap nowadays, you don’t have any excuse to use a free host. Spending a few bucks a month isn’t going to put that much of a dent in your pocket.

Sign #3: Their domain was registered within the past month

Do a whois lookup for the domain, and check when the domain was registered. If you see some claim about them being Established since 1999 whilst their domain was registered a considerable amount of time after that, then you automatically know they’re lying. Move along to the next crappy host.

Sign #4: No visible contact info

When you can’t find any contact info, or anything about the company you’re potentially purchasing hosting from - that’s a big red flag. Hosting companies should be upfront about their location, their staff, their phone numbers, etc. It’s probably not going to be a good idea to get hosting from an anonymous source. Also check if their details for their domain registration are hidden behind whois privacy.

Sign #5: 100% Uptime Guaranteed

Don’t fall for this gimmick. Make sure you read the fine print associated with this “guarantee.” Is there any monetary compensation if the site goes down? Does this apply to network uptime only? Try to check their uptime rating from a third party site to get a feel of what their uptime really is. Remember, if a host is down for 1 second, that’s not 100% uptime anymore, is it?

Sign #6: They force you to register a domain with them

Never register a domain with a web host. They usually try to sucker you in with a “free” domain if you pay for a certain amount of hosting. Most cases, you aren’t even the listed owner of the domain, they are. So what do you do when you realize the host sucks? You could leave, but they’ll probably hold your domain hostage and make you beg to get it back. Too bad for you.

Sign #7: Their live support is always offline

If you see some button that says “Live Support” which redirects you to a page that says something like this: Our live support is currently unavailable, please leave a message and we’ll get back to you ASAP, then that’s not good. You want support to be available 24/7 via e-mail, ticket, or phone - preferably all three.

Sign: #8: Google returns over 500 results for “*web host name* sucks”

Now this may not be a surefire way of accurately gauging a web host’s crappiness, but it’s a good thing to check. Here are some real host examples:

GoDaddy (5,480)

LunarPages (641)

1and1 (1,040) + 1&1 (375)

DreamHost (3,410)

Please take all of these signs into consideration when looking for a web host. Do your due diligence and read unbiased reviews at places like Web Hosting Talk. I would personally recommend HostGator, and I’m not saying that just because I’m an affiliate and I make money off you if you sign up with them. They’re actually a quality host with great support. You can go to straight HostGator.com for all I care.

Let’s face it, nothing screams out “newbie” more than having a .blogspot.com blog URL, except maybe a .uni.cc. You need your own domain name if you expect people to take you seriously online. What if you saw some alleged (blank) guru’s blog hosted on a .blogspot.com or .wordpress.com URL? Doesn’t look very professional, to say the least. Come on, they cost like $8 per year. Shouldn’t all you future money making bloggers be able to put down $8 per year to register your own domain name? I hope so. When you do choose a domain, just don’t make any of these mistakes…

Getting anything but a .com

.com is king! .com is king! Get that through your head. Don’t settle for anything less than .com for any website or blog. Let’s go over some of the alternatives, shall we?

.biz - That looks pretty cool I guess, .biz is short for business right? Wow, my blog is sort of about business, I should get this! Umm…wrong! Nobody has heard of .biz, noone cares about it, it’s tacky, it looks stupid, the list goes on…

.name - Hey, I have a name right? Maybe I should get my full name in the .name extension. That’s what it’s for right? WRONG! Develop your site on a .name and be the laughing stock of the blogosphere.

.info - Yet another useless TLD. Shouldn’t all websites have some sort of information on them? Why do you need a silly extension like this to tell visitors that? You don’t.

All right, maybe it’s okay to get something other than .com, but use other extensions sparingly. Some blogs have had good success with .net, .org, and even local country code extensions.

Using a .mobi

This could have probably gone in the list above, but this extension is so pointless I felt it deserved its own section. Dot mobi was originally designed for the mobile web. In case you didn’t know, it doesn’t matter which extension you use to access a website on a mobile phone and you don’t need a .mobi to do it.

Using a lot of hyphens for “SEO” purposes

You may have heard some self-proclaimed SEO expert that it helps with search engine rankings if you have a really long, hard to remember, hyphenated domain - full of keywords. So does that mean you should go off and register learn-to-make-money-online.com? I don’t think so. One, because someone already took that domain and two, even if it was available - it would make for a terrible blog URL. So why wouldn’t you want to register one of these ever-so coveted keyword rich domains? Because they’re hard to remember, they’re hard to brand, and they’re hard to advertise. Imagine trying to fit that URL into a 125×125 banner ad. Not a pretty sight.

Using numbers or abbreviations in your domain

Domains with abbreviations and numbers isn’t good. Jeffro2pt0, a great blog, is unfortunately guilty of this - on both counts. It’s supposed to be pronounced “Jeffro two point oh” which I guess is some play on web 2.0. It takes a really loyal userbase to remember a domain like this. Of course there may be some exceptions to this rule. The “101″ suffix comes to mind, if you have some sort of how-to blog for example.

Getting a domain with a well-known trademark in the URL

Getting a URL with stuff like Microsoft, Google, Ebay, PayPal, Yahoo, and other well-known companies is a big no-no. Sure, some of these companies may not mind if you’re promoting their services, but why take the risk? These gigantic companies are rich enough to afford lengthly legal battles, and you’re not…yet. Please be careful when registering trademark infringing names like this.

Registering a typo of a competing blog

Another big no-no. What do you think is going to happen when a visitor makes a typo when visiting John Chow and arrives at your cheesy knock-off site instead? They’re probably going to leave pretty fast, not to mention you look like an unoriginal copycatter (although I do admit John Cow is pretty cool for a copycat).

Registering the wrong name

Before you register and pay for a domain, make 100% sure that it’s spelled how you want it. You’ll feel pretty stupid when you realize your mistake after paying. Some registrars don’t offer refunds, but some do. Even if you’re forced to keep the name, who cares? It’s only an extra $8 per year, which is peanuts compared to all the earnings you’ll get. You can still forward it to your site and catch any visitors who may make the same mistake you did.

Using a domain that is hard to pronounce

This is another one to be aware of. It’s hard to pronounce a domain without vowels in it. How the heck are you supposed to pronounce Frrvrr? Try to imagine this site advertised on the radio, for example.

Radio announcer: What is your site about?
Frrvrr owner: Dunno…but it uses “cutting-edge technology”
Radio announcer: “So what’s your site called again?”
Frrvrr owner: “It’s fur ver!”
Radio announcer: “And how do you spell that exactly?”
Frrvrr owner: “eff - are - are - vee - are - are”
Radio announcer: *phone ringing* We have a caller.
The caller: Your domain sucks! Get a new one!

Although a lot of these “web 2.0″ sites like Flickr have great success with these sort of domains, they’re not a good choice in general unless you are able to brand it well - despite the difficult name.

Conclusion
So try to get a .com domain, avoid hyphens, avoid numbers, avoid trademarks, avoid typos. Make sure it’s easy to remember and somewhat relevant to your topic. After this you should be good to go. There are a number of good domain registrars out there, including GoDaddy and NameCheap.
